Well, the holidays seem so far ago, yet it was only a matter of weeks. We've come upon a pretty mild winter so far, and both the girls are enjoying the recent snow that had fallen to a respectable level. Avery is very aware of her surroundings now and pretty much understands all that we say...she has been saying "um ma, apple, uh oh, and occasionally ah bba." She's definitely a feisty one compared to Elliot at the same age. As for Elliot, she has been great in helping the younger ones at school with tying their shoe laces. She's an expert now and has taught several kids how to tie on their own. Maria Montessori would be so proud!

The week has been eventful! An afternoon with nuns (a school event), an evening with friends at the Botanic Garden, a dinner with the grandparents, and a holiday fest!
Also, a night out at Ysuho with Max's parents was on the agenda. Everyone ate well and returned with full bellies!

This week was special. Our Daddy turned the BIG 40! He's so young at heart and still dresses like he's a college dude. Also, he's got a full head of hair, so he looks like he's in college. Well, Mama and Daddy went off one night to Piccolo Sogno to celebrate and came back FULL. They shared their leftovers the next day while Elliot was at school. Phooey.
The celebration continued with a yummy for your tummy tiramisu cake from Three Tarts. We all ate well at Five Guys - of course, that was my Daddy's choice.
The rest of the week was pretty normal with trips to the children's museum and a shopping trip to downtown. We also went to Elliot's school's Holiday Sing where Elliot belted out some tunes.
Today, we're off to a local winter fest, and my parents are going out on a double date. They really know how to extend a birthday celebration.

Christmas is near and Thanksgiving has passed. We spent a festive holiday weekend in Kentucky with Uncle Mark and clan. We also spent a day in Nashville to eat at the Local Taco and at Hanabi with friends. Seeing family far away was a treat!
Back in Chicago, Avery rammed her nose into the coffee table which is why she looks like she had a nose job. Avery is on to bigger and brighter things. She's understanding many words and signing her desires to us (e.g. more, eat, milk, please). Halmonee taught her to sign "please" so Avery can demand her candy and sweets. Avery is also spooning her food by herself and also placing an edamame onto a spoon and feeding herself. She's all grown up in some respects.
Elliot sang again at her annual Holiday Sing with her school. She spent much of the time on stage waving to her fan club - Maeve's twin siblings. She had a blast and didn't even wince at the sight of Santa or his elf. Meanwhile Avery cried hysterically when she sat on Santa's lap over the weekend. Furthermore, Avery cried when she caught a glimpse of the Elf. So sorry!
Also, we had a pleasant visit from John Lee all the way from DC/VA. He came with dinner and couldn't have been a better surprise during the week.

Insects Galore!

Halloween came and went with a lot of hoopla and too much candy in our house. Not that Mama and Daddy mind! They gave a lot of the sweets away, but I (Elliot) still compiled a huge stash. Avery also contributed her share and she managed to receive a heavy load! She couldn't carry all her goods since she was double-fisted with lollipops, tootsie rolls, and Skittles. I guess people think babies need their stock of sweets too.
We went trick-or-treating twice! Once with my friend, George, in downtown Glencoe and the afternoon romp was in our neighborhood. My neighbor, Virginia, joined us for the walk. I could have been done after 20 minutes, but my parents and Avery wanted to walk a marathon or something.
Since Halloween, life has been pretty busy with play dates & fairs (Winnetka Comm House). Also, my parents were busy going out (GT Oyster), so we spent some time with my grandparents. My mama needed some time with girlfriends, so she went out for tea at the Drake. She really loves her alone time, and we got our fill of pony rides and watching the tube with Daddy!
I went out on my first date! It was a movie and lunch date with my bestie, George. We went to see a 3D movie called Puss in Boots. We were in our own world and didn't even mind the entourage of other family members!
Also, Avery is walking more and more confidently now! She's also getting her 13th and 14th teeth. She's well on her way to growing up!

October is such a fun month! My Mama & Daddy are always taking us to different events. This past week was full of afternoon delights. We went to the treehouse at Northbrook Mall, had a spontaneous play date at Kohl's Children's Museum, ran around at soccer and pranced at my ballet class. Phew, have the afternoons been full!
Also, my Daddy took me to the Boo Bash where I decorated my own cookie and played all sorts of carnival games. I returned with so many treats that literally my hands were full!
On Sunday, we had our annual Pumpkin Run event at our school. I ran like there was a wolf chasing me! Then, we had activities in the park as usual.
Last Saturday was a full day! I had my art/geometry class, came home for lunch date with a friend, and then, went to a birthday party at Make A Messterpiece. Now, that was a treat! Too bad my parents' favorite team lost their football game. It was a solemn afternoon after that.

October Festivities

With October, there are so many festivities related to the onset of Autumn. So, Elliot and Avery have been eager to participate in all that is fun. On Columbus Day, we ventured to Didier Farms to ride ponies, feed parakeets, eat funnel cake and cotton candy, and ride many fun carnival rides. Too bad every day wasn't like Columbus Day!
With Daddy gone for the week, the rest of us enjoyed the sun and more spring like weather even though we're in mid-October! We took walks and had some fun play dates.
Lately Avery has been very expressive as you can view in the photos. Elliot has been getting more territorial over her space which always makes for an interesting exchange.
Soccer has been a fun diversion for Elliot and now, we'll add ballet to her week starting next week. Hopefully, she'll find an interest and stick with it, but no one's rushing her.

School Days & Autumn

The days have been blending together with school, play dates, and long walks. Elliot has been doing well at school with guiding her younger friends with help. Also, she's been in soccer class with a few friends from her school. She's also into cuddle time with Mama which means chillaxin on the couch!
Avery has been active yet still cruising around and rocking to music. Her favorite word is "hi!" which she repeats like a parrot at times. She's been getting into Elliot's territory lately, so the noise level and the arguments/crying has escalated recently. All in all, life in the Ko household has been fun!
Over Mama's birthday, she was suffering from the flu, so her gift was time in bed! What a gift! Mama and Daddy did end up at the Publican to celebrate her 21st birthday (more like 38th). The cuisine was good and the ambiance was buzzing.
With the onset of autumn days, Daddy and Elliot went apple picking while Mama and Avery took long naps. They returned with some scrumptious apples and we devoured them too quickly.

Vacation!

Our trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Mackinac Island was very relaxing and a great getaway! We spent most of the time eating, lounging, swimming, sleeping and sightseeing to the fullest.
The first day was spent mostly driving and singing in the car with the DVD player on. Avery was pretty good with naps although they were short. When we arrived at the Homestead in Glen Arbor, we settled in and made our way to dinner at Boonedocks. Then, we went for a short walk to Lake Michigan to take in the views. Elliot and Daddy took a dip in the pool at the Beach Club and then came back when it started drizzling.
On Thursday, we had breakfast at Leelanau Coffee and then made our way to Sleeping Bear Dunes for the infamous climb. We hiked for about an hour or so. Our camera made its fall into the sand, so it was out of use for the rest of the trip. We picked up a disposable camera so we could capture the memories as best as we could. While Avery took a nap, Elliot and Daddy took a walk in the Village. Then, we had lunch at the condo. Afterwards we hit the Beach Club and the sandy beaches of the lakefront. We enjoyed the swim and Avery especially likes to play in the water. The lake was pretty clear and shallow. The afternoon was spent napping and lounging. While Elliot and Daddy took a walk, Avery napped and when she woke, we hit the Beach Club again. Then, we all went to town to shop and browse. We picked up a yummy pizza from Bear Claw and took a nice stroll.
On Friday, we took a hike up the Empire Bluffs. It was a gorgeous view from the top and very windy! The hike wasn't that long so we returned to the Homestead for Avery's nap and packed for the road. We hit the road to Mackinac Island! The trip was about 3 hours with a pit stop at McDonald's. Then, we took a ferry to the island and what an adventure to be on an island without cars. Only horses, bikes and feet were required! We settled in at the Island Hotel and then took a stroll to the Mission Point Resort. We relaxed before going to dinner at Milly's. While Avery slept early, Elliot and Daddy took in the sights from the huge porch of the Island Hotel.
On Saturday, it rained most of the morning. Elliot and Daddy hit the pool while Mama and Avery stayed in the hotel room. Then, we had the best burgers at Chuck Wagon! After lunch, we took a horse drawn carriage tour of the entire island. It was so informative and we even had a pair of horses named Cyndi and Lauper. How clever. After the long tour, Avery and Elliot were both ready for a nap while Mama and Daddy watched the U of M football game. Yes, the football season started! We took another stroll around and shopped for fudge and candy. For dinner, we had a lovely dinner at the hotel where all the wait staff loved Avery and Avery couldn't get enough of them! She was so smittened by the men! Boy, are we in trouble.
On Sunday, we had another good breakfast at the hotel where we said our goodbyes to the waitstaff and checked out. We returned to the ferry dock after a stroll and made our way back to Mackinaw City to drive home. Home sweet home. Felt like we were gone forever, and it was splendid to sleep in our own beds!

Summer Chillaxin!

Summer is winding down....Girls are active and we're enjoying the beautiful high 70/low 80 degree temps. We've been blessed with gorgeous weather lately.
While Elliot started a new soccer class with her best bud, Mama went to visit a newborn, Jack, who is simply adorable. Avery does what she does best...cruising around and sticking every possible object in her oral cavity. So fun for Mama and Daddy.
Avery had her 1 year appointment with her doc. She didn't care for the finger prick and the 3 shots, but Mama rewarded her wailing with a gobstopper. Elliot had her FluMist vaccine and thought the world was going to end while the nurse shot it up her nostrils. How lovely. Anyhow, Avery is doing well on her stats...25th percentile for weight; 75th percentile for height; and 50th-75th percentile for head circumference.
Had a good weekend of just plain relaxing. Went to a korean adoptee event at our church. A long walk along the beach near Northwestern U. Good food. Elliot going swimming with her Daddy at the pool. Summer chillaxin!
We're closing out the summer with a vacation to the upper/western Michigan region. First stop is Glen Arbor/Sleeping Bear Dunes and the second stop is Mackinac Island. Hopefully everyone will cooperate the close quarters and the long car ride!

Happy Birthday to Avery who turned one on Aug 21st! There were many folks who came out to celebrate...including family from the DC area as well as Michigan. There was plenty of new faces to meet Avery and cake to enjoy! Avery always likes to meet new and old faces. She loved all the festivities and hopes to see you all again soon!

The heat wave continues with storms intermingled to create an interesting week. We've had no issues with flooding, but our dear neighbors have dealt with damage that is evidenced on garbage day. The heaps and piles of trashed carpeting and the like line the streets of Winnetka.
We've managed to somehow stay cool under the oppressive heat...beach runs, museum trips, sprinkler/squirt gun fights and eating lots of popsicles/ice cream. Elliot and Avery both enjoy the ice cream treats the most.
Elliot's dance class is officially over. She'd rather play sports, so we're going to support her decision. She says that dance class was a bit boring. She's so discriminate nowadays.
Elliot and Avery met a friend from NJ who traveled far to finally meet. Maddie was a very shy gal but the cutest shy gal we know! Hope to see her again before she's an adult. Mama keeps nagging Maddie's mom to move back. We'll see who wins.

Heat Wave

Boy, has it been HOT! Well, with the temps rising, we've been staying indoors....except for the occasional water fights in the backyard. Elliot got a few squirt guns that she really loves to use. Not a bad idea when it's above 90 degrees outside.
Avery has been getting more confident with her cruising abilities. She's not interested in crawling and just wants to hoist herself up with anything tall. She manages to crawl over to any table/chair and stands up all by herself! Also, Avery likes to talk...bababa...mamama...lalalala. It's a riveting monologue!
Last week, we went into the city and went swimming with Aunt Judy. It was fun to swim and lounge in the pool. Avery had a habit of drinking the water, so Mama was busy saying her no's. It was a nice retreat from the sun!

Grandma's birthday was a big one this year and the whole family showed up in Chicago ready to celebrate! Yay! Lots of catching up to do and many hugs and kisses were shared.
The weekend was full of family events. Also, managed to get to the Art Institute and the Millennium Park. Ate well over the weekend and topped it off with a delicioso cake from Three Tarts!

Mama claims that her sanity is back intact since this week Elliot is back at school for summer camp. Elliot enjoys being back with her school friends and seeing her old chums once again. Avery is on to bigger and better tasks...eating less baby food and more toddler foods. Also, she is officially an experienced crawler! And on Friday, she even ventured up the stairs. They were only 2 or 3 stairs, but she's getting more assertive and active. Maybe Mama's sanity isn't normal. She's gotta babyproof the house and be on ALERT!
This week, there were many trips to the playground with the kids and running errands. Some bike trips around the block and many walks. It's been nice to have quiet mornings once again. Also, the 4th of July weekend is here with a BIG birthday celebration for Elliot/Avery's grandma. It'll be her 70th birthday! Yay! This means yummy food with good company. Elliot's cousins from Kentucky and Michigan are on their way!

Mama says she had a hard week. No Dad around. Elliot's out of school. Avery's more demanding. All this sums up to TROUBLE. But I (Elliot) think Mama just needs to put me in front of the tv more often. She'd have it so easy...
Monday, I had a play date with my bestest friend from school, George. Tuesday, Grandma, Mama, Avery & I headed down to the Field Museum on a HOT day. Ate at Del Seoul again! Feasted on yummy for your tummy dishes. Even Grandma liked the food there. Wednesday, a good friend from school, Julia, came over for a nice play date. Thursday, I had my last Hot Shots sports class for the quarter. Grandma and grandpa came over for dinner. Friday, I went to a fair in our hood with friends who are moving to Colorado. Will miss them and hopefully, they will miss Chicago enough to move back!
The weekend was better since Daddy made his return. Also, I went to a birthday party on Saturday and made another trip to the fair for more cotton candy. It's my favorite! Then, on Sunday, we made it to Cooper's baptism lunch. Cooper and his daddy matched outfits. I should consider that with my Daddy, but not sure he owns any dresses/skirts. Too bad.
Last weekend was even more hectic. My Mama was extraordinarily happy cause she really likes running into old friends. First, I had my last day at Korean school for this school year. Yes, I was sad. I'm still sad. Anyhow, that evening, we celebrated Will's 1st year party with good friends, and the next day, we celebrated a 100th day party with my Mama's chums. I had a grand old time hanging out with new friends as old as high schoolers.
While Elliot started VBS for the first time, her cousin, Kiki, came to Chicago for a long visit. We had a festive time building forts, babysitting Avery, going out to eat with the grandparents, shopping at the best toy store, and so much more!

Summer Vacation!

Well, summer vacation has started for Elliot! With school no longer on the agenda, Elliot is going to have a blast giggling with Avery and scheduling many play dates.
This week was pretty low key. There were many walks to the playground and for soft serve. We ran into many old friends and made new ones at the playground. Elliot is such the social butterfly. Avery has been enjoying the swing at the playground while Elliot prances around. They've both tried to "race" each other on the swing, but Avery isn't that competitive.
Avery has been stuffing her mouth with lots of goodies. Since she's on her 6th tooth, everything goes in and out of her mouth. Which explains her runny nose this week.
Over the holiday Memorial Day weekend, we laid low and took many fun trips on our staycation. We hit the outlet mall in Kenosha, WI on Sat with grandma. Then, on Sunday, we tried a mega-church in the morning and hit Super H mart for lunch. My parents hired a babysitter for the night, so they hung out in Evanston at Union and kicked back. That night brought them back to the pre-kids days. On Monday, we went downtown to hang out at the zoo, had a grand feast at Del Seoul and got wet at Millennium Park. We also ran into some old friends at the Park. It was quite a hot day, so we returned for a relaxing evening at home with more soft serve!

Spring Cleaning

Spring is definitely here with showers, but it's May and the flowers should be in bloom. My parents are busy cleaning the house and getting rid of stuff to be sold at our church's rummage sale. They love to clear the house out with clutter. In Elliot's world, we would never throw a single thing away. But we live in the real world where a clutter-free home is a high priority. We helped out at the rummage sale for a couple of days. Avery manned the front table with Mama, while Elliot rode all the ride-on toys to showcase to the customers. The system works well.
After a cold week, we managed to stay sane and weather the storms. Elliot got new earphones/headphones, so thunderstorms aren't such a big deal anymore. They leave impressions on the side of her head, but they're better than dealing with cries in the middle of the night.
Also, Elliot got a haircut. First attempt was made by Mama, while the second attempt was more polished at the hair salon. Elliot seems to like the salon's attempt. We don't blame her.
Avery went to see the doc for her 9 month visit, and it was the shortest well visit we've had on record. She didn't have any concerns. And the only shot she received on her juicy thigh was pretty easy to deal with. Avery let out a yelp of discomfort and that was the end of that. Mama was pleased. Avery's stats are pretty good - 17 lbs 6 oz (25th-50th percentile); 28.5" (75th-90th percentile); and 18" head circumference (90th percentile). Thanks to their Daddy, Avery and Elliot's noggins are always fairly large.
It's a long holiday weekend and going to continue on with household schtuff and relaxing over the weekend. Happy Memorial Day to all!

Summery Heat

Boy, was it a warm week in Chicago! It was nice to take trips to the playground, beach, playdates, walks, etc. We ran into lots of folks these days cause everyone is out and about! Elliot ran into her friend, Julia, from school at the playground. Elliot gave our neighbor's dog, Ellie, a long walk in the neighborhood. We got out the sidewalk chalk and colored in the back yard. Elliot's buddy, George, came over for a long play date and transformed into Darth Vader. Elliot transformed into Aurora, her latest favorite princess. And we ran into Mama's old boss again! I think everyone is out from their hibernation.
Daddy was outta town this week, so Elliot and Avery did their best to keep Mama busy. Avery was sick again with a cold. Lots of tissues were used. Avery's been a good sport though. She's been experiencing a little more separation anxiety so cries more at night. But Mama has learned to tune her out...well, she tries.
We had a couple of playdates with my friend from DC who is in town. We ventured to Kohl's one day and then, Elliot hosted a date at her home. We wished they lived closer, but we'll take what we can get. Also, Mama went to see Bridesmaids and couldn't stop laughing her head off. I'd (Elliot) like to have seen that!
Over the weekend, we celebrated Mother's Day which was a beautiful day. Mama enjoyed a great day at the spa with a facial, massage, and a mani/pedi. The funny thing was that a big Polish woman was the masseuse and she kept saying, "oh my god...oh my god...another knot..." "What type of work do you do?" Well, the knots have been massaged out...well, let's hope!

Family Time

Elliot's cousins were in town for the week with their relatives from Korea. So, that translates to a lot of family get togethers and dinners. We met up on Monday night for dinner at Woo Lae Oak. On Wednesday, Elliot gave them a tour of the Botanic Garden. And then, they all piled into our place for dinner. Meanwhile Grandpa and Grandma stayed with us for a few nights. I wished my grandparents hung out more at our place, but I guess they have people to meet and places to go...
It was Parent's Day at my (Elliot's) school this morning, so my Mama came and received her Mama's Day card that I made and a red rose. It was the perfect pair! Also, I showed her some works that I do at school and how I write my letters and how I can count. I also got to see my favorite friend so we set up a play date for next week! I love play dates with George!
Also, my friend from DC, Anna, stopped by Chicago and we had a play date with her and her baby sis this afternoon. We danced around like ballerinas and had perfect form - perfect form for a toddler that is!
The weekend was packed with many events. There was Korean school, Peyton's birthday party, Samantha's dance recital and small group. Lots going on and it's only going to get busier!

Easter was similar to last year with multiple egg hunts, meeting up with the Easter Bunny, and celebrating at church. This time around, I (Elliot) met the Easter Bunny at the Winnetka Egg Hunt, but I knew he was a man. Somehow I figured it out. My parents are a bit perplexed as to how I figured it out, but now I have the upper hand!
Since I've lost my afternoon nap, I've realized how much time elapses during such precious hours of the day! Now, I get to dress up like a princess and have multiple costume changes! All in a span of an hour! Then, I can have a tea party and go run errands with my mama! When Avery naps, my mama and I run out the door...mostly we make runs to the grocery store, library, or we even go to the children's museum! Yay for me!
We've been enjoying the sun and the warmth with long walks to the playground and it's never too cold for McDonald's. Don't tell my doc because at my last visit, I told him I ate a lot of veggies. Which is true! Anyhow, I did wail BIG time during my visit cause the nurse gave me a shot and I wrestled and tried my best to make an escape. But these adults are way too big for me. One day I'll show em who's bigger!
Avery has been getting more "physical" which means that she's very active when she wants to be. Her legs are constantly moving and wriggling around. Parents wanna call me (Avery), "Thumper" or "Lord of the River Dance" aka Michael Flatley. But it doesn't matter what they call me! My legs cannot be restrained!

Birthday Festivities

Boy, what a weekend! I (Elliot) was born just two days before my grandpa's birthday. I wanted to have the same birthday as him, but I thought we each should have our own special day. So, we celebrated my birthday on Sat and my parents threw a festive partay! My cousins from Michigan, my aunt/uncle, my grandparents, my school friends and my church friends all came to my magic party. Before the magician did his thang, my cousin was in charge of the games. So, Kiki directed everyone to play some games while everyone was getting settled. Then, the magician did some weird tricks that all wowed us. I had a good time, but some of the tricks were unbelievable! After that, the balloon animals came out and cake and treats were eaten! It was such a fun celebration! Can't wait until next year, but think my parents need a break from the party planning aspect.
Then, on Sat night, we went out for my grandpa's birthday, since family was in town. The best part was the slumber party though. I slept with Kiki and though I didn't get much rest, I was elated! My smile didn't wear out even when I was snoozing. On Sunday morning, we ventured to the Bahai Temple and took their first trip to Costco. Afterwards, we went to my grandparents' church to celebrate again with a grandiose lunch and two birthday cakes. I love this time of the year!
With the spring blooms and the warmth, we've been taking many walks in the afternoon. My mama needs to get outta the house, so we venture to the playground or to my grandparents' house. On Wed, we even made to Ben and Jerry's for their free cone day. How does this week get better? The only person missing out on the action is my Daddy. He's in DC, but I'll treat him to ice cream when he returns. I think he's deserving of it!

Wowzers! Elliot turns 4 on Saturday! How time flies! Mama went to Elliot's school today to celebrate her birthday with her class. A few favorite books were read and Elliot ran around the sun with a globe in her arms. Running around the sun for every year of her age is a long trek...thankfully, Elliot is only 4 and not 74!
This week has been pretty quiet with the routine back at school and at Hot Shots. One notable aspect of this week is that Elliot is NOT a napper any longer. With the onset of her 4th birthday, Elliot has matured out of a nap into an early sleeper in the evening. This switch may make her Mama a lil' crazy. Let's hope Elliot goes easy on her during the transition.
Avery's front upper teeth are making their appearance. She loves to gnaw on her high chair, Mama's fingers and anything else in her path...watch out!

Spring break is here for Elliot! This means a lot of yoga for the lil' one. Elliot is a yoga master after spending most of the week on her yoga mat in different poses. Namaste!
This week has been very relaxing with visits to the library, playground, walks, shopping and play dates with friends. Gotta luv the time off from school! Also, Elliot got a chance to celebrate a friend's birthday with school friends at Pump It Up. And dragged my sister, Avery, and Mama to the children's museum yet again.
My Daddy is the bestest ever! He took me (Elliot) on my first dinner/movie date night. We ate at Fox & Obel and watched Hop on the premier night downtown. I was Miss Social Butterfly while I chatted it up with other patrons at the theatre. It was my kind of night!
The last couple of weeks have been great with the warm sun and some dinners with friends. We're looking forward to the spring. Also, Mama & Daddy celebrated their 7 year anniversary on March 20th. They came back giddy from The Girl and The Goat. I (Elliot) don't know if it was the meal or the champagne & cocktails, but my mama was extraordinarily happy. I think she should celebrate their anniversary every day....then, at least, she'd be off my back.
Avery's bottom two teeth are now more visible. Her temperament is pretty adorable especially when she wakes. Avery can also sit up by herself pretty well now. There are some days when she loses her balance, but overall, she's mastering this skill. And she really is opinionated when it comes to food. She'll tell you right off the bat if she likes/dislikes something. When she likes a dish, she'll lean forward and move in on the spoon. Like a ravenous shark after her meal. When she dislikes a dish, she'll clamp her mouth SHUT. No way of changing her mind! Hopefully this attitude doesn't filter into other areas of her life...let's hope!

It's been a relatively quiet few weeks. Dad was out of town in Colorado snowboarding with his friends. A man-cation was in order, so Mama and the girls spent a lot of time bonding.
Someone's been getting more sound sleep at night...which means that Mama has also been getting more rest. Despite the quiet nights, there's been more reasons to see the doctor during the day. Elliot brought home a nice bacteria called Strep from school and thankfully, she's the only one with the bug. More importantly, Elliot loves the flavor of the antibiotic, so she eagerly awaits her meds. Who wouldn't love a bubble gum flavored suspension?
It's always astounding how a toddler's taste buds range. Elliot loves some odd tastes - from bean sprouts to edamame - which don't have pungent flavors, yet she couldn't get enough some days. Thankfully this makes cooking for Mama easier!
Daddy is out of town again next week, so it should be another interesting time without him! Toodles!

Thank goodness for health insurance cause Mama has been shuttling Elliot, Avery and the grandparents to and from doctor visits. She should do this for a living, but don't think she loves it. We started Tuesday off with dropping off the grandparents for their colonoscopies and Mama was their chauffeur. Then, Elliot had to see an allergist in Highland Park, and thank God that it's not serious...just an elevated immune response. We're going to zap every hive away!
On Wednesday, Avery wasn't too happy about getting four shots at the doc's office. But the good news is that she's TALL - 90th percentile for height at 27 inches; 50th percentile for weight at 15lbs 12oz; and between 50th and 75th percentiles for her head circumference at 16 7/8 inches. And the other interesting aspect of the Ko household is that we make a lot of ear wax. Doc had to remove some of Avery's wax which wasn't fun. Mama thought it was fun cause Elliot has the same issue!
Monday started off more fun for Elliot since there was no school and Daddy was off for Prez Day. We ate breakfast at Hotcakes in Wilmette and ventured to Kohl's childrens museum. We hung out there for quite some time and saw some interesting insects bigger than Elliot's hand (roaches!). Also, we saw puppies for adoption. Mama would've brought one home, but she's delirious from the lack of sleep and having a sore throat. While at the museum, Elliot managed to color her face and this time around, painted her fingernails hot pink...just the right color.
The weekend was relaxing with watching "Waiting for Superman" and Elliot going to Korean Language School. Hopefully, she'll know more Korean than her parents one day in the future.
Mama's been really sick these days and though all the kids made it to the doc, she's reluctant to go to hers...because her doc is downtown. She thinks she's a doc and uses salt water to fix just about any ailment. We shall see who wins...

Well, the spring like temps are here but not for long. We enjoyed walks while the temps reached as high as 60 degrees! Avery especially enjoyed the wind and the air outside. Before then, she thought the whole world revolved indoors. Oh, little one.
Avery is definitely getting more mature. She's almost 6 months, and she spends less time bothering her mama at night. We hope this trend continues. This way Mama won't have bags under her eyes and look so sickly.
Elliot started Korean language classes! Not only is she learning korean words, but she gets to watch Tinkerbell in korean. Last week, Mama forgot to bring a lunch, so Elliot had to mooch off of her friends' lunches. It's a good thing their mamas didn't forget.
Valentine's day was on Monday, and we celebrated with Elliot making the family pizzas. Daddy bought tulips and a yummy for your tummy chocolate cake. He knows how to woo women. Fortunately, he doesn't really have to strive too hard in this department any longer...or does he?

Arctic Temps

The temps have been low...single digit low! With Dad in warm Washington DC, it was a relatively quiet week with two sick kiddos.
Superbowl Sunday was pretty entertaining, but more importantly, the party we went to had the most delicious potluck! It was our kind of party! We left with full bellies and not surprisingly were not as concerned about the outcome of the game.
Lately, Elliot has been expressing some funny/quirky sayings.

At bedtime, Elliot: I will dream about the big family (grandparents & cousins) and the small family (Daddy, Mama, Elliot & Avery). When Avery gets bigger, she can sleep in my bed & I will go work downstairs.
Mama: Okay, go to sleep now.

On two occasions, Elliot has expressed how she'll show Avery the ropes...
E: When Avery gets bigger, I'm going to tell Avery all the rules.
M: I guess we have a lot of rules to be conveyed to the lil' kiddos.

With Elliot's birthday in a few months, it's time to think about the venue and such...
E: Mama, I will invite YOU to my party.
M: That's good cause I'm the one organizing the party.

Well, as you may have heard, Chicago got a lot of snow! A LOT! A TON! More like A MILLION TONS! First things first, Elliot had two snow days from school! For some reason, as her mama, I thought she'd miss her school more, but I guess playing in the snow is much more fun. After Elliot played outdoors for over an hour, she returned with the reddest cheeks to be seen! Mama thought she got wind burned! Then she returned outdoors later to build a snowman. It's a must with all the snow.
Avery has been a trooper trying new foods these days. Peas, carrots, apples and more. We think she's got a feisty appetite which is good because she'll fit right into our family! Also, Avery has migrated out of the bassinet into her big crib. That means more stairs for Mama, but she could use the exercise especially at 3am!
Last week, Elliot took Mama to her school and showed her her classroom. She showed Mama all the different works that she concentrates on...puzzles, skeletons, making soap shavings, using the eye dropper, and more. Also, Mama went to her class another day to observe and learned that Elliot is one of the silly ones in her classroom. It's an honor to be a mom of Elliot!
Not much else going on...just trying to thank God for a warm home and good health!

Milestones

Avery reached a milestone last week and was it recorded? No, because we didn't witness it firsthand. Avery rolled from back to stomach and stomach to back a few times, but none of the occurrences were witnessed by either parent. This is very sad to report but so likely of us to miss one of her few milestones. We're such terrible parents.
Mama went to observe Elliot at her school this week and pretty much concluded that she loves school...loves to be silly at school but doesn't particularly focus on her work. We had to have a chat this week about being silly at home and more focused at school. There's a time and a place for everything.
Avery has been losing lots of hair lately. Her beautiful head of hair has been disappearing...from the photos recently, you can see more of her scalp. This milestone was pretty hard to miss!
Last week, we had a play date with some friends, and guess what?!? Elliot was the oldest kiddo there...pretty big news since most other places we go, she's the youngest. After a full morning at the play date, Elliot had a lively and entertaining party in the afternoon for a friend's birthday. It was all pink and the decor revolved around princesses. It was her cup of tea!
Lately, Mama and Daddy love to kiss chubby cheeks...guess who's?? Avery's cheeks are full and plump that we can't get enough of them!

Baby, it's cold outside! The chilly days and nights are here to stay. Lately, Elliot's been playing a lot with a new sports class, some play dates (Elyse and Mikel), a trip to the museum, and watching a play (Little Red Riding Hood) with Elyse and Mama.
Over MLK Day, my daddy had it off so we hung out like old chums...eating, lounging and a lot of horse play.
Da Bears have been winning lately. Hopefully, they'll beat out the cheese heads on Sunday.
Also, Avery's been interested in whatever we put in our mouths. Her focus and concentration are intense when it's meal time! Also, we may believe that Avery is right-handed. Whenever she's nursing and her right arm is free, she feels Mama's face as if she's blind. Sometimes, she caresses her face and other times, she slaps it. It's quite a shocker sometimes...especially to Mama's cheek.

I'm having a staring contest with my friend

2011 started with new challenges. Mama had to take care of two lil' ones without any help while Daddy was in DC for the week. Thankfully, everyone was healthy and slept pretty well...especially Avery.
Last Sunday, we had a gathering of friends and Elliot bonded with some new friends as far as California and Naperville. Hopefully, these reunions will be a tradition over the holidays. There were lots of catching up to do over cake and sweets.
Also, with Daddy out of town, we scheduled a few play dates with Cooper and Aunt Grace. They came over and helped Mama devour Portillo's chocolate cake. Aunt Grace took most of it home so Mama would no longer be tempted.

Happy New Year to you all! We spent NYE at home like a usual night. Elliot was the first to go down, then Avery, then Mama and finally, it was Daddy's turn. That's standard protocol around here regardless of any holiday. Mama and Daddy shared some bubbly and called it a night while Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin entertained Daddy until the count down.
Avery has been sleeping not so well lately, but we finally attributed it to Mama's wine consumption. Now, we know what makes Avery soooo gassy in the wee hours of the morning.
On New Year's day, we ventured downtown for a hearty breakfast at Wishbone. Then, we shopped a lil' and stopped by the Hancock to see the trains this year. The rest of the afternoon was spent watching football. Too bad the Wolverines lost, yet again.
Tonight, we're looking forward to dduk gook and a prosperous year!

The holidays are upon us! With Christmas behind us now, vacation from school and the new year awaits!
Elliot was excited for Santa's arrival and he brought many gifts to her delight! Many of them were princess-related of course. Avery was pretty chill throughout the festivities even though her gifts were minimal compared to her big sis.
After Christmas, we are scheduling lots of play dates! Monday, we spent some time with Cooper, Will, Josie, Matthew and the Kimsters from Cali. Tuesday, Elliot hosted a play date with her friends from school. Wednesday, Elliot will have another play date with the boys (Will and Cole) from her school. Thursday, she'll hang with Ainsley and the rest of the week should be family time.

Winter Vacation!

Yay it's winter vacation! Elliot has been hosting play dates and watching many holiday movies. She'd prefer this way of life, but she knows deep down that she misses school and her lil' friends.
The Christmas gifts are pouring in, and Elliot has been excited to open them. Sometimes, she eyes the gift tags with her name and even wanted to open Paddy's gift when her name appeared on the "FROM:" slot. I don't think she'd like the LEGO car anyhow. She's better off waiting for HER gifts.
We went to an annual Christmas party and Elliot and parents all enjoyed the festivities. Avery was too sleepy to check out the hoopla. Daddy was on the floor laughing during the Minute to Win It games. He should've volunteered!
Also, Avery had her 4th month well visit with the doctor. Avery didn't cry very much with the shots, but did make a statement with her height. She's 90th percentile with a height of 25.5". Her head is 16" and her weight is 13 lbs 2 oz...both head and weight are at the 50th percentile.
Christmas is around the corner...Hope you all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

An army of germs has infiltrated our home this week. So far, Elliot and Daddy have been knocked down, but they're doing much, much better. Elliot went to the doctor this week & walked out with a breathing contraption...pretty cool. We even saw Daddy go to bed as early as 8:30 one night...that's unheard of around here! Today, Avery has a high fever, but her mood is wonderful. Maybe she likes the taste of medicine. Mama has a slight cough, but hopefully will stand strong until everyone else gets back on their feet.
As the week winds down, hopefully the germs will make their plan of escape cause the Ko family will not be an easy battle! Here are some photos of happier, healthier days...which will be around the corner...must stay positive!

We've been trekking from one function to the next lately. First, I (Elliot) had two performances on one day. I'm not even a singer yet I had one musical at church and another at school. I've been practicing some of the songs in the car, but the funny thing is that now my mama sings all the songs and won't stop. Please, mom!
Lately my daddy and I have been hitting the pool! It's been great fun, and these days, my latest trick is to try to push my daddy into the pool. One day, I'll be strong enough to push him in! Maybe I'll get Avery to also push.
Avery has been doing much better these days. She gets all smiley after a good meal. Also, she's pretty strong and flat as a board when you hold her up. She likes to stand erect. She looks funny, and we all usually get a good laugh. Little does she know that we're all laughing at her.
My parents have been sleep training Avery. Before with me, they'd stay up and wait until I slept soundly at night. With Avery, they fall asleep before she does...that's pretty indicative of their energy levels.
It's been great to have my daddy home more often. We celebrated his birthday last week at Bob Chinn's and feasted on king crab. The rolls were the best too! Also, I pretend to be Belle, Daddy is the Beast, and Mama is the wolf. The latest role playing is manifested where the Beast saves Belle from the wolf. And then, Belle nurtures the Beast back to health. I can reenact this scene over and over. Unfortunately, my parents do get tired of it. Too bad cause I run the show!

Winter Wonderland

Wowzers, the snow has arrived and that means only one thing! Making snowmen! I (Elliot) made over a dozen little snowmen in our yard and propped them up for all the passerbys to see. I think the best part was throwing snow at my daddy!
Saturday was a treat. With the snow falling down, Elliot and Avery met Santa and sat on his lap twice...it was for a photo op and we really needed to get a nice shot. It was a good thing Santa was so patient, but I guess he has to be since his business is to deal with lil' tykes. Anyhow, Elliot and Daddy went on a horse-drawn carriage ride while Mama relaxed with Avery sipping coffee. The snow was falling and it was a picturesque scene! Then, we went to Kid Motion to play.
Elliot also picked out a Christmas tree with Daddy and hauled it home. Mama and Elliot decorated while Avery directed the placement of the lights/ornaments.
Last weekend, we ventured to the Shedd Aquarium. It was the first for Avery, but she was too exhausted to view anything. Elliot did her part and saw as many fish, penguins and whales as she could see. Also, she saw the Dora/Diego 4D movie with Daddy and loved every minute of it.
It was a relatively quiet week at home while Daddy was in DC. We've been role playing a lot from Beauty and the Beast, and also pretending to be a doggy or a lion...go figure!

A few weeks ago, daddy made a pair of high heels for our princess. With some electric tape, a pair of slippers and wooden blocks...presto! Elliot is showing off her new pair with some flair.

Mama: How was your day at school?
Elliot: Good.
M: What did you do?
E: Nothing.
Silence in the car with the radio playing...
E: Mama?
M: Yes...
E: Can you get me Belle's dress? The yellow one?
M: Sure (with hesitation).
E: And the high heels?
M: Okay.

That same day after Elliot's nap -
M: Did you have a good nap?
E: Yes.
M: What did you dream about?
E: Shoes.
M: Shoes?
E: Yeah, high heels.

Enough said. The lil' girl wants some high heels...and despite protest from her dad, I'll have to buy her a few pairs. This decision may cause a slight rift between mama and daddy, but it'll bring such joy to our lil' runt.

Other than these conversations, we had a quiet week with daddy in DC. Aunt HaeJin stopped by to pay us a visit before her lil' belly pops! Cooper is going to be adorable when he arrives, but it looks like he's pretty comfy in utero. Also, Aunt Grace came over to hang out and play horse with Elliot. Fun times.

Avery's 100th Day

We celebrated Avery's 100th day a bit early so that most of the family could make it. Uncles, aunts & cousins from miles away were able to come and meet Avery for the first or second time. It was a great feast with food and laughter all around.
Looking forward to Thanksgiving as we're reminded again how much we have to be thankful for...

Well, the chill has arrived with the onset of November. It was a relatively quiet week. One noteworthy thing about this week is that Avery has finally broken her grandma down. Grandma had been coming over during the week to help out. She called in sick on Tuesday and hasn't shown her face around here. Fatigue is contagious when you help out a fussy baby!
Since grandma was ill, grandpa came to babysit Avery and to cover during Elliot's carpool hours. On Wednesday, when mama released grandpa from his duties, he exclaimed, "I'm Free!" Enough said.
Avery's getting into a daytime rhythm while the night sleep has been sporadic. Most nights she allows mama only 2.5 hour stretches. One day she'll figure it out, but until then, don't expect her mama to be coherent...oh, and this is the reason for mama's bags under her eyes...and her gray hair...
With fall finally settling in, the days have been getting shorter and the nights colder. We're looking forward to upcoming events - Avery's 100th day, Thanksgiving and some family birthdays...yay for celebrations!

Halloween Schalloween

Elliot - Halloween rocks when your parents are really into soliciting your children for free treats. We went trick or treating two days in a row. Once with some cool friends in Glencoe and the next day with my folks around our hood. I came home with plenty of treats. My grandpa asked for some treats this morning, and I said that he has to ask in full costume. That's the rule around here...
Visitors have been passing through...first, Aunt Judy came bearing gifts for Avery. She will have the coolest pair of shoes and don the prettiest socks. Also, we had Mikel over for a belated birthday dinner.
Elliot is still in the princess mode while her more aggressive side is manifested when she's in her Darth Vader costume. She's gone to another princess party which only solidified her affinity to Belle. Now Cinderella has been kicked to the curb. We'll see which princess will be her next target.

Princesses Galore

Elliot has been invited to a couple of princess parties...brings much joy to a toddler who thinks her alter ego is Cinderella.
Other than imitating a princess, Elliot has been showing off her little sister to friends at school. We made it to the Pumpkin Run where Elliot raced with other kiddos. There were a lot of games, face painting and mingling.
For some odd reason, Elliot gravitates towards the evil force. Seong jumped at the chance to buy a Darth Vader costume for our lil princess.

It's October! Where do the days go? These days we've been dealing with Avery's high maintenance demands, going to Winnetka's October Fest, surprising a special couple at an engagement partay, visiting the doc for the annual flu vaccines, sampling nearly an entire bag of chips at Costco (Elliot with Grandpa), working on leaves at school, biking around the hood, and getting over a cold (Elliot).
Plus, the weather has been GORGEOUS!

Life has been good although the sleepless nights continue...this phase shall soon pass. Avery has been a good baby overall, but she's now entering the 4-6 week "fussy" period. This translates to being held more day and night. Not sure why this period is marked by fussiness, but let's pray that this too shall pass.
Events from the past few weeks include Mama's birthday (21st! she's finally legal to drink!), a baby shower for an auntie, a trip to the city, a few new visitors (Mikel & Ginna), doctor's visits (Avery), and a few unwanted viruses. All in all, a pretty good few weeks. Mama and the clan even survived a week without Daddy while he was in DC. It's a great thing we live close to Grandma in Chicago. Hopefully one day soon, Avery will get to meet her extended family in DC...including those folks at FDIC!
Also, Avery is now in the 75th percentile for head, weight and height measurements. The doctor even called her names "Fatty" and "Piggy"...not sure how Avery will eventually embrace him.

We're taking one day at a time...sleep deprivation has left us to just appreciate & survive each day. Had a few visitors lately to hold Avery and entertain Elliot. We're all doing well and getting into a routine...we hope.

A Post Partum Update

Things have been busy at the Ko household with many visitors and some chaos. Elliot has been busy with Dad going to many sights (Brookfield zoo, Pump it Up, Kohl's Children's Museum, Abt, etc) around town. Avery's been busy breastfeeding, sleeping, and taking care of business down below.
Also, Elliot has started school with a new class and a new teacher. She's already got a new good friend to hang with. Avery has met her new pediatrician and they've bonded where bursts of crying are involved.
Sisters are getting along fine. Elliot likes to show her affection and Avery receives them well. Here are a few photos from the past couple of weeks...

Our second daughter just arrived last Saturday, August 21st, at 3:14am. Avery Hyunah Ko weighed 7 lbs 14 oz and measured 20 inches. She's been a great little sister while Elliot has taken on her big sister role with ease and protectiveness.
After a short labor that started at 8pm, we got to the hospital at 11pm. The doctor was a bit delayed after they broke my water, so Avery would've come out sooner. She was ready to make her presence known...the L/D nurse was especially surprised by her grip. Avery grabbed her scissors with a force she didn't expect which could be the reason she gave Avery a APGAR score of 10! Boy, Avery impressed her.

Quiet Week

Thought my baby sister would be here over the weekend, but she wanted to hibernate another week. Smart kid since she'll sleep better in utero than out. Over the weekend, we met up with my cousins who spent a day in Chicago. It was fun running around with them while my mama thought she was on her way to the hospital.
So, it was a quiet week with my mama snoozing a lot. But we managed to get out a bit. I hung out with my grandparents while my mama went to the doctor. They really like me to entertain them with my new dance moves. I can bust a move when I'm in the mood, and somehow, they bring out the groove in me.
Today, we went to a special event at Make a Messterpiece in the Glen. We had a great time painting on walls, on paper, on a pencil case, and anything imaginable. Not only did we paint, I made my very own fizzy lemonade with baking soda. It was so yummy I had to pee every hour thereafter. Then, we spent the day shopping at Room & Board and eating a dipped cone at Dairy Queen. The best part was that my mama won a raffle at the Messterpiece place and I can't wait to see my gift basket! Hooray!
Looking forward to the weekend with my friends from NY. We're gonna show them a grand ole time in the best city!

So we've been spending a lot of our time indoors. The scorching heat is getting to us. I've been stating how sweaty I get, and my complaints have deterred my mama from venturing outdoors.
We made it through this week without my baby sister arriving. My mama was a bit nervous cause my daddy was outta town and my grandparents were vacationing up north. But they all returned on Thursday night when my mama had some contractions. What timing...but no arrival of baby Ko yet.
I went to a farm on Friday morning and got to feed hay to the cows. They were the friendliest cows I've ever met. I was busy throwing hay while my mama got bit by flies. She should know better than to sit on the sidelines. We also heard roosters crowing and saw horses galloping. We stumbled upon a cookie decorating session, so I got creative and designed a few cookies as a pig and a chick. It was quite a yummy activity!
This week I spent some time with a new babysitter who will come by more often once my baby sister arrives. She is pretty cool and likes to pay attention to moi. Yeah, my parents have to pay for this service. It's an interesting trade.
